BARBARA COOPER
Mezzo-soprano
Ms. Cooper received her Bachelor of Music Education from the State University of New York at
Fredonia and Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Ms. Cooper is a well-known performing artist in the Western New York region, a 2 time winner of
the annual Baird Concerto Competition at the State University of New York at Buffalo and semi-finalist of
the Lola Wilson Hayes International Vocal Competition in NYC.
In addition to performing frequently as a concert soloist and recitalist, she is an Instructor of Voice for
Villa Maria College, public school music teacher, private vocal coach, choir director for Trinity Episcopal
Church of Buffalo, and vocal consultant for local choruses. Her students have gone on to attend
prestigious universities and conservatories, won local, regional and national competitions, and are
enjoying successful professional careers.
Prior to arriving in Western New York, Ms. Cooper performed for more than 10 years in Boston, MA
with The Russian Chamber Chorus of Boston, The John Oliver Chorale, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus
of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and The New Boston Theatre Company.
She has performed the roles of Orfeus (Orfeus et Euridice), Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), Juno
(Semele), Marcellina (The Marriage of Figaro), Bianca (The Rape of Lucretia), and Mercedes
(Carmen), as well as various other supporting roles. Ms. Cooper has performed as soloist with Dave
Brubeck, back-up singer for Sara Brightman, recorded with John Williams on the film “Indiana Jones and
the Temple of Doom” as well as preparing and conducting choruses with Kenny Rogers.
In addition to performing standard repertoire, Ms. Cooper is an enthusiastic advocate of contemporary
vocal repertoire. She has given several world and North American premieres of contemporary works and
enjoys collaborating with composers at every opportunity.
